Master’s by Coursework in Canada.

Master’s by Coursework in Canada

When considering a masters course, students always want to ensure that the course fits with their prior studies, helps in developing new skills and improves their future career opportunities too. But there are many other factors to consider as well, such as fees, living costs, choosing the right university and adhering to the rules.

Canada is one of the most popular options for international students. There are a range of universities offering master’s degrees in many areas including business, management, engineering, computer science, finance, education, health and much more.

One course type that many international students usually consider is a masters by coursework. This is usually taught by a mixture of taught content, assignments, exams, presentations and other assessments. Also, depending on the degree you choose, you may have to do a practical project, work placement or capstone assignment.

If you want to develop your knowledge within a certain area but don’t want to do a research-based course then a masters by coursework could be the best option.

In this guide we will show you how to study a masters in Canada, the best universities you can apply for, popular courses, entry requirements, what it will cost, working part-time, post study work, spouse eligibility and how to get your study permit.

What is a master’s by coursework in Canada?

A master’s by coursework is a postgraduate degree that you can achieve by completing a number of advanced modules. Most often you will attend classes, study course content, complete assignments and pass assessments.

This can vary between universities and courses but some may also require you to complete a final project, internship, practical or small research element. A coursework degree does not always mean you will not complete any research based assignments.

For example if you are doing a Master of Business Administration you may complete modules such as marketing, finance, leadership, business strategies and operations. If you are doing a professional master’s in technology you may complete technical modules, projects and develop your skills to be able to apply your knowledge to real life situations.

How a coursework master is different from a thesis-based master’s

The main difference is how students complete their degree. A coursework master’s places more emphasis on taught subjects, while a thesis-based master’s requires students to carry out an extended independent research project.

Feature Master’s by coursework Thesis-based master’s
Main focus Taught subjects and assessments Independent research and a thesis
Learning style Classes, assignments, presentations and projects Research, academic supervision and thesis writing
Assessment Exams, assignments, projects and presentations Research work, thesis and other programme requirements
Best suited to Students seeking advanced subject knowledge or professional skills Students interested in research or further academic study
Practical learning May include case studies, placements or capstone projects Depends on the research topic and programme
Duration Often 1 to 2 years, depending on the programme Often 1 to 2 years or longer, depending on the research and programme

These are general differences. Individual programmes may combine coursework with a project or research requirement.
