Choosing a University to study in Germany

Germany has different types of education providers that offer higher education. These can be divided into:

Universities (includes Universities of Technology)

Universities of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschulen)

  • Practice-Oriented

Study in Germany in English Language

It is not necessary as an International Student that you need to know German Language as the programs are offered in English Language. But knowing German would be an advantage for you if planning to study in Germany as it will open gateway to number of opportunities like will be able to interact local people, at the time of internship as German is the official language, travelling etc.

To study in Germany in English, you’re required to meet English Language Proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL etc English Language Tests.

Eligibility Criteria for Bachelor Program to study in Germany

Unlike our Indian High Secondary Education System of 12 years, Germany includes 13 year. To balance our eligibility requirement as an International Student from India planning to study in Germany, we need to have:

  • Completed first or second year of a Bachelor Program from a recognised university here in our home country in the relevant subject field.

OR

  • Completed IB or ICGSE or similar internationally recognised examination.

OR

  • Studying A Foundation Course – Studienkolleg which prepares for Feststellungsprufung.

To get enrol in the Studienkolleg one needs to have 12th Class certificate with German Proficiency of B1 or B2 Level. You need to give an entrance exam –Aufnahmeprufung to get admission in the foundation course. This foundation course is of two-semester duration which will prepare for the Feststellungsprufung – this assesses student’s proficiency in subjects which are crucial to your chosen degree program and in German Language. The successful completion of the Feststellungsprufung makes one eligible to apply for a Bachelor Degree program to study in Germany.

Requirements for Bachelor Program to study in Germany:

  • Public University: IELTS Overall 6.0 not less than 5.5 is required or equivalent TOEFL.
  • Private University: IELTS Overall 5.5 not less than 5.0 is required or equivalent TOEFL.

Process to apply to study in Germany

  1. Send your application to University or Uni-Assist –a body that accepts application, screens it and forwards it to the member universities.
  2. Apply for your student visa to study in Germany which requires a Blocked Account.
  3. Arrange for accommodation in Germany through the International Office of your University.
  4. Arrive a week before the beginning of your course on approval of your visa to study in Germany.
  5. Get your residence permit within the first three months of your stay in Germany from the Foreigners’ Registration Office.

Expenses in Germany

  • Tuition Fees: At Public University, the education is subsidized by the State because of which you need to pay no or very less tuition fee unlike Private Universities.
  • Semester Contribution: You need to pay Semester Contribution ranging from Euro 20 to 250. This includes the other benefits from the universities like Public Transportation.
  • Personal Expenses: You need to have Euro 700-800 per month for your housing, food, clothing, study material and other activities.

Work while Study in Germany
